The Future

In late December 2002, it was reported that Umberto had asked Fresco to resign, but due to the board's complete support, Fresco remained the chairman. Fresco stated that the new restructuring plan would go forward as planned and announced plans to launch four new car models in 2003.

According to analysts, Fiat's board supported Fresco since he was the force behind the GM deal. Without Fresco, the expected discussions with GM in 2004 could be jeopardized. A Fiat board member said, "Fresco is involved with all the big relationships with the government and GM. Why should he go when he is doing a good job?" Commenting on this, Fresco said, "Any change in strategy now is very dangerous for our customers, employees, and creditors." In late December 2002, Fiat's COO Alessandro Barberis was made the CEO. The new CEO announced various plans to focus on R&D and control costs. He said that Fiat would be investing around €2.5 billion per annum on R&D to develop new innovative models in line with changing customer preferences...
